The Setting

Starting at the Belgrave Station, this century-old heritage railway first opened in the early 1900s to connect remote farming communities in the Dandenong Ranges. Today, it’s lovingly maintained by volunteers and remains one of the world’s best-preserved steam railways. As you step onto the platform, you’ll notice the beautifully restored carriages, the vintage signage, and the friendly crew dressed in classic uniforms.

The Scenic Ride

The train winds its way through lush fern gullies, towering mountain ash forests, and open farmland, passing quaint stations along the way. What’s more fun is that you can feel the cool mountain air on your face as you sit on the wooden carriage ledges with your legs hanging out! Its a tradition unique to Puffing Billy that makes the train ride delightfully immersive and thrilling.

The Belgrave to Lakeside route is the most popular, taking about an hour each way. Along the journey, you’ll cross the iconic Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge, an engineering marvel from 1899, and travel past picture-perfect picnic spots, forest trails, and hidden clearings. Families can enjoy a relaxed lunch here by the Emerald Lake before catching a return train or continuing to Gembrook.

If you choose to continue to Gembrook, you’ll be treated to even more stunning scenery and charming country views. Its perfect for a full-day outing. With its boutique cafés, bakeries, and antique shops, Gembrook captures the charm of rural Victoria. You can wander around, chat with locals, and enjoy a meal before taking the return journey.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor, a local revisiting childhood memories, or someone looking to rediscover Victoria’s beauty, this steam train adventure through the Dandenongs leaves you with that warm, nostalgic feeling that lingers long after the journey ends.
