Great Valley Trail

The Great Valley Trail is a thrilling addition to Victoria’s hiking and outdoor pursuits, presenting a 16-kilometre family-friendly shared trail experience. This scenic trail closely follows the picturesque Ovens River and the iconic Great Alpine Road, forging a remarkable 27-kilometre link connecting Harrietville and Bright. Moreover, it serves as an extension of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, stretching all the way to the foothills of the majestic Alps.

The Great Valley Trail is a versatile multi-use trail that welcomes exploration on foot, bike, or horseback. Its accessibility, diversity, and distinctive nature make it an exceptional rail trail experience. Meandering through captivating heritage-classified rivers, majestic valleys, serene lakes, and awe-inspiring mountains, this trail promises a close encounter with nature’s finest offerings. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll, an exhilarating bike ride, or a peaceful horseback journey, The Great Valley Trail offers something extraordinary for everyone to enjoy.

The 16 km trail starts at Tawonga Gap Road and links to the existing trail at Stony Creek Road (Harrietville Trout Farm). It is a 2m wide sealed trail along its entire length (approximately 27km from Bright – Harrietville), with grades suitable for children and families. The proposed alignment stays as close as possible to the Ovens River, switching sides on a number of bridges (new and existing) and provides a recreational experience through lightly used sections of riverside reserves.
