Exploring the Kitty Miller Bay Shipwreck Walk, Phillip Island

If you’re looking for a mix of adventure and history on Phillip Island, the Kitty Miller Bay Shipwreck Walk is a must-visit.

This coastal trail takes you along rugged cliffs and stunning beaches, offering sweeping ocean views at every turn. The highlight of the walk is the remains of the SS Speke, a ship that ran aground here in 1906.

At low tide, you can get up close to the wreckage and imagine the ship’s final moments. The bow, or “nose,” of the SS Speke now rests on its side, hidden behind cliffs to the east of Kitty Miller Bay. At the time of its wreck in 1906, the Speke was one of the largest sailing ships of its kind, making its remnants an intriguing piece of maritime history to explore during your walk.

The walk is short but packed with natural beauty and a sense of mystery. This makes it perfect for an afternoon of exploration. The path is uneven so watch your step.

Protect wildlife: Please take note of the signs advising how to protect wildlife, particularly the endangered Hooded Plover chicks. When walking along the beach, it’s best to stay closer to the water and away from the dunes, as this helps protect their nesting habitats.

The area is located within Ventnor which is just west of Cowes and offers a picturesque coastal retreat with breathtaking views toward Flinders. Ventnor is also the location of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. It was named after the town of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.

This charming area is surrounded by sprawling farmland that seamlessly blends rural tranquility with coastal beauty. In Ventnor, you’ll find the Anchorage Caravan Park, a convenient general store, and The Store– a local favorite for coffee. The Phillip Island Winery is nearby, along with an array of classic bed & breakfast options and holiday rentals, perfect for a relaxing getaway.

For a more immersive experience, Ventnor boasts several unique farm stays. Consider Five Acres Farm Stay, Bimbadeen Phillip Island, Grey Goose @Smiths, Omaru Farm Stay, or Ripples N Tonic, where you can enjoy the peaceful countryside and experience authentic farm life on Phillip Island.

Other Things to Do Nearby

Just a short drive away, Smiths Beach is perfect for surfers of all levels or simply enjoying the waves.

Get up close with Australian animals like kangaroos, koalas, and emus.

Stroll along The Nobbies’ spectacular clifftop boardwalks. Enjoy 500 meters of winding timber paths that wrap around the southwestern tip of Phillip Island, revealing dramatic views over Bass Strait, rugged coastal rock formations, and out to Seal Rocks (approximately 1.5 kilometers offshore), where Australia’s largest fur seal colony makes its home.

Start/ finish: The Nobbies Centre, 1320 Ventnor Rd

If conditions are right, witness the explosive blowhole in action as waves crash into the sea cave below and keep your eyes peeled for Little Penguins in their burrows, Silver Gulls nesting, and migrating whales passing by in winter. The raw coastal beauty is unforgettable. The dark basalt cliffs formed from cooling lava 50 million years ago plunge dramatically into the churning ocean below. Please come prepared though as even on calm days, the headland can be windy, so secure your hat and bring layers!

End your day by watching the famous little penguins return to shore at sunset—an unforgettable Phillip Island experience.
