Toora: A hidden gem waiting to be explored

Nestled between the Strzelecki foothills and Corner Inlet Marine and Coastal Reserve, Toora overlooks the internationally famous Wilsons Promontory National Park. From stunning coastal landscapes to warm hospitality, this charming town has a lot to offer travellers seeking a peaceful retreat.

Toora is surrounded by nature’s splendor and we definitely had an amazing day trip exploring this town recently. Here’s what we did:

Agnes Falls: just a short walk from the carpark, Agnes Fallsare Victoria’s highest single-span waterfall. As you approach, the cascading waterfalls creates a mesmerizing sight, gracefully pouring over rocks. Embark on a leisurely stroll along the well-maintained viewing platforms, allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the sheer splendor of nature. Take in the sights and sounds, as the rushing waters and lush surroundings transport you to a world of tranquility and natural wonder.

On our way towards Agnes Falls, we stopped at Silcock Hill Road which offered a stunning view of the town and Wilson’s Promontory in the south. Great opportunity to stop and enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the way and take some pictures.

Toora Wind Farm: The Toora wind turbines were installed in 2001! Witness the graceful dance of 12 wind turbines against the backdrop of rolling hills. We were in awe of how tall these were! In fact, the graceful rotation of giant wind turbines against the backdrop of rolling green hills was a relaxing meditative experience for me.

Toora Heritage Pear Orchard: a hidden treasure where you can pick fresh, juicy pears and learn about the region’s agricultural history.

Toora Wetlands and Toora Bird Hide: Nestled at the end of Toora Jetty Road lies a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers – the Toora Bird Hide. This tranquil sanctuary offers a unique vantage point to observe the rich biodiversity of a wetland area that holds international significance, classified under the esteemed 1975 Ramsar convention. Accessible via a well-maintained 500-meter boardwalk, this bird hide promises an easy and wheelchair-friendly 10-minute return walk, making it an ideal destination for everyone seeking a serene nature retreat. With the elevated vantage point, you can quietly observe various waterfowl, migratory birds, and even rare species that call this wetland home. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera to capture these fleeting moments of natural beauty.

Explore the scenic walking trails that wind through lush forests and take in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

Toora Boat Ramp and Jetty: For outdoor enthusiasts, Toora offers fantastic opportunities for fishing, boating, and hiking. Cast your line into Corner Inlet and experience the thrill of reeling in a big catch. If you enjoy water activities, head to the Toora Boat Ramp and Jetty. Launch your boat or simply take a leisurely stroll along the jetty. You can enjoy fishing, soak up the serene atmosphere, and witness beautiful sunsets over the water.

Turtons Creek Falls: Nestled in the hills of Foster, a mere 20-minute drive from Toora, are the enchanting Turtons Creek Falls. Here you’ll encounter a few inviting picnic grounds, perfect for a leisurely stop amidst the serene surroundings. Additionally, a convenient car park awaits near the falls, making access a breeze.

Turtons Creek Falls is located approximately 15 km north of Foster deep in the Strzelecki Ranges. The area contains 2 very easily accessed waterfalls with the main Turtons Creek Falls less than 20 metres from the road is a very spectacular water fall of around 6 metres in height with the water cascading down a staircase of rock. The reserve just down stream of the falls offers plenty of open well kept grass area for a picnic, BBQ lunch or an overnight stop. About 200 metres upstream and by road are another small picnic area and another small waterfall about 3 metres in height but a very pretty spot none the less. Turtons Creek Falls are probably best taken in as part of a drive through the Strzelecki Ranges from either Foster or Boolarra.

And yes, don’t forget to stop and enjoy the panoramic views from the Toora Lookout, where you can admire the rugged coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s also a perfect spot to capture stunning photographs.
